چکیده

Introduction RBCT is still a subject of debate with 2 main questions: what is the optimal threshold? and does transfusion impact the outcome?. Concerning septic patients, a threshold of 10 g/dL was for many years the objective during the first hours of septic shock and since the last surviving sepsis campaign, a threshold of 7 g/dL for stabilized septic patients is proposed. Nevertheless, the evidence base dealing with septic patients remains poor and cohort studies bring divergent results.

Impact of transfusion on patients with sepsis admitted in intensive care unit: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) threshold in patients with sepsis remains a matter of controversy. A threshold of 7 g/dL for stabilized patients with sepsis is commonly proposed, although debated. The aim of the study was to compare the benefit and harm of restrictive versus liberal RBCT strategies in order to guide physicians on RBCT strategies in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock....

Association of red blood cell transfusion and in-hospital mortality in patients admitted to the intensive care unit: a systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION Previous research has debated whether red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is associated with decreased or increased mortality in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the relationship of RBC transfusion with in-hospital mortality in ICU patients. METHODS We carried out a literature search on Medline (1950 thr...

Red blood cell transfusion in the resuscitation of septic patients with hematological malignancies

BACKGROUND Indications for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion in septic acute circulatory failure remain unclear. We addressed the practices and the prognostic impact of RBC transfusion in the early resuscitation of severe sepsis and septic shock in patients with hematological malignancies. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected database of patients with hema...

Hydroxyethyl starch versus other fluids for non-septic patients in the intensive care unit: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

INTRODUCTION Use of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) in septic patients is reported to increase the mortality and incidence of renal replacement therapy (RRT). However, whether or not use of HES would induce the same result in non-septic patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains unclear. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate 6% HES versus other fluids for non-septic ICU patients....

Anemia and transfusion after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Delayed cerebral ischemia after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may be affected by a number of factors, including cerebral blood flow and oxygen delivery. Anemia affects about half of patients with SAH and is associated with worse outcome. Anemia also may contribute to the development of or exacerbate delayed cerebral ischemia. This review was designed to examine the prevalence and impact of anem...
